Final Major Project

Technical techniques:  Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, AE,
Adobe Areo
For my Final Major Project, I created an interactive, space-themed museum display that brings together creativity, science and design. I’ve always been fascinated by space, especially the visual language used to represent it, and I wanted my project to reflect that excitement. My aim was to design something that felt immersive and engaging, encouraging people to be curious and inspired by the subject.
The display includes a hologram, eighteen hexagon-based visual panels and two graphics boards, all designed to give the feel of a real museum experience. I designed and animated my hologram video in Adobe After Effects, learning new techniques and pushing myself creatively. I explored platforms like TikTok and YouTube to see how other creatives used the software, which helped me feel more confident using the tools and bringing my ideas to life.
As part of my research, I used resources from NASA and the Micro Observatory to explore space photography. This sparked my curiosity about how space images are captured and colourised. I found it really inspiring to see how artists and scientists work together to make these images accessible to the public. Even though I couldn’t include every visual in my final piece, the learning process added a lot of depth to my understanding and ideas.
I designed a screen using foam board to support the hologram display. It was a simple but effective solution that worked well for my needs, and I included a space for the projector based on what I learned during early testing. I made creative decisions throughout the process that helped shape the final outcome in a practical and thoughtful way.
I also experimented with coloured filters, lino printing and layered image techniques to explore traditional methods in combination with digital design. These creative trials added an extra layer to my process and gave me exciting ideas for future work.
Overall, I’m really proud of this project. It reflects my interests and shows how design can be used to educate and inspire. I’ve learned so much about storytelling, visual communication and how to build an experience that people can connect with. This project has helped me grow as a creative and shown me that I really enjoy designing for interactive and educational spaces.
Hexagon Display
Some elements within the display feature anaglyph 3D effects, which require red and blue 3D glasses to fully enjoy. If you have a pair of 3D glasses lying around, I encourage you to use them when viewing the display to experience the added depth and interactivity. This playful technique invites viewers to engage with the work in a more immersive and memorable way.
Hologram Video
I spent time teaching myself Adobe After Effects, a program I wanted to master despite having very little background knowledge beyond a small motion graphics project from my second year. I really wanted to push my creative boundaries and develop a new skill set for this project.
Since I knew early on that I wanted to create a hologram video for my final assignment, it made sense to use professional software within the Creative Cloud. I took the initiative to learn the tools myself, which eventually led me to building the physical projector for the final display.
